We leave Nairobi at 8.00 am driving to Nyeri at the foot of the Aberdare Mountains arriving just in time for lunch at the Aberdares Country Club. The afternoon is at our disposal with the options of relaxing leisurely at the lodge or taking a visit to the nearby Solio Ranch for a game drive in the Rhino Sanctuary. Solio Ranch hosts one of the world’s largest concentrations of Black Rhinos. The White Rhino is also found here as well as Leopards, and a wide range of plains game and bird life. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the Lodge.
After breakfast, we drive 70 kilometers northwestwards, crossing the equator at Nanyuki to the School of Adventure (2900m) on the northern slopes of Mt. Kenya. This is our base for the Mt. Kenya climb. Here, we meet with our crew and after introductions we start the climb at 11.30 am. The 4hour hike takes us to Marania campsite (3300m) set in middle of the moorland, leaving behind a beautiful forest inhabited by a variety of wildlife. Overnight stay will be in tents at a fly camp.
We continue hiking after breakfast and head for Major’s Camp (4000m). The trail passes through the moorland dotted with Senecia and Lobelia. We take a lunch break at Allan’s point. The hike takes about 6hours. In the late afternoon, we arrive at the scenic spot with a good view of Mt. Kenya peaks. The crew has already set camp and prepared dinner. Overnight stay will once again be spent in tents.
After breakfast, we hike on passing the prominent Terere and Sendeo peaks. The 6hour hike takes us up to 4600m reaching the alpine dessert. Here we stop for a lunch break. A very steep descend takes us to Shipton’s Camp (4200m) just at the base of the 3 main peaks Batian, Nelion and Lenana. We can opt to spend the night in tents or in the dormitories on bunk beds.
Our climb takes us round the base of the peaks, via Hausberg (4600m) and Nanyuki tarn to the Two Tarn Hut (4600m). After a lunch stop at the Two Tarn Hut, we descend to Teleki Hut and arrive in the early afternoon. We have time to explore the area near the camp and can watch sunbirds and hyrax hiding in the rocks. The crew prepares dinner and we retire early to the bunk beds in the dormitories so as to be well-rested for tomorrows summit challenge.
After an early morning breakfast at 4.00am, the trek leads via a steep screed to the Austrian Hut at 4790m. Here, we take a short break and have some hot tea and biscuits before the final ascend to point Lenana (4895m) via Lewis Glacier. After watching the sunrise, we descend on the northern side via Simba Cole to the Mintos Hut (4200m) for lunch and continue down on the Chogoria route, passing on the ridge of the Gorge valley that overlooks Lake Michaelson. After short but steep descend, we reach the floor of the scenic Gorge Valley. Overnight stay will be in tents at shores of Lake Michaelson (3400m).
Today we descend to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas at 3000m. First, we have a steep ascend followed by a gentle 3-4 hour downhill walk. On our way, we may encounter buffaloes, Klipp springers, Zebras and sometimes Elephants. At the bandas, the crew prepares a delicious barbeque dinner, while we enjoy the first hot shower in 6 days of our Mt. Kenya adventures. Overnight will be at the Bandas.
Today, 4 X 4 vehicles will take us to Chogoria. During the rainy season, we may have to walk a short distance because the vehicle may not be able to reach the bandas. At the forest gate we will have lunch and bid the crew farewell before joining our safari driver for the transfer to Nairobi or any other onward travel destination
