4 Days Mount Kenya Sirimon – Chogoria
We leave Nairobi at 8.30am for transfer to the Sirimon Park Gate (2,660m) at the base of our Mt. Kenya trail. Here we meet our mountain crew and after introductions we start hiking at approximately 11am. A gentle 4hour walk with lunch on the way takes us to the Old Moses Camp (3,300m). We shall spend our first night in the dormitories at the hut on the edge of the forest. The bamboo forest is home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species.
Today we leave the camp at 8.30am and continue our hike through the moorland characterized by a variety of Senecia and Lobelia to the Shipton’s Camp (4200m). We take a 14km hike through the Mackinder Valley for about 6 to 7 hours with a lunch break on the way. Shipton’s Camp situated just below the 3 majestic Mt Kenya peaks-Batian, Nelion and Lenana offers a spectacular view over the peaks as the sun sets. Dinner and overnight stay will be in the dormitories at the camp.
After an early morning breakfast at 4.00am, the trail leads via a steep screed to the Simba Cole and through a rocky terrain to Point Lenana-the hikers’ summit. We arrive just in time to watch the sunrise. The views over the plains below and the Nelion and Batian opposite us are magnificent. After photo shots, we descend to the Simba Cole and continue on to Mintos hut (4200m). Here we have a lunch break before we pass along a ridge which overlooking the Gorge Valley and Lake Michaelson. In the late afternoon, we arrive at our camp tired but we are happy to find our fly camp already set up at the road head at 3300m by the crew next to the banks the Nithi River tributary.
Today, we descend further to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas (3000m). On our short 2hour hike, we may encounter buffaloes, Klipspringers, Zebras and possibly Elephants. At the bandas, there will be 4×4 vehicles waiting to drive us through a dense bamboo forest on the slippery roads to Chogoria. Here we will meet our onward Safari driver and have a picnic lunch before biding the crew farewell. We then drive to Nairobi or our next Safari destination.
